One Liner: Chaos and compassion at their best!
Book Blurb
Mrs Choudhary is a middle-aged lady full of love, laughter, chaos, and unsolicited advice. When a teeny chick crash-lands into her life, it leads to a series of events involving a whole range of animals and birds.
The story comes in the third-person POV.
My Thoughts
Sonal is a dear friend, and I (and my mom) followed her chick (bird baby) rescue posts with loads of hope and relief. If there was anyone who could have saved Ms. Tiny, it was Sonal, and she did it. We equally love her other pets too (one dog, two cats, one African Grey, a rescue budgie, and a few finches), of course! In a way, parts of the book are real, but with many fictional elements.
The setting is an upper-middle-class gated community in Hyderabad. While I haven’t lived in gated communities, this city is my home, so it is familiar in terms of the kind of people you are likely to meet. And yes, I have the same complaint about older folks who are so skilled and shameless in stealing flowers from others’ plants for their pooja. We buy flowers weekly for our gods, and these retired, well-off folks go on a morning walk to pluck flowers from any plant they come across. They even break the stems in their enthusiasm, and no amount of warnings works. Ugh! (Sorry, I had to rant about this.)
On the surface, it’s a humorous, crazy, and chaotic life-of-the-slice family drama. After all, with so many temperaments in one home, life can never be dull. However, the story goes much beyond what’s on the surface.
This is not just a story of a (over)zealous middle-aged woman with strong opinions (why even have opinions if they aren’t strong, right?), a huge heart, and determination that can move mountains. It’s a story of a mother who believes in doing the best for her babies (human and non-human kind), who is more than willing to risk her life if it means she can help a creature that cannot speak for itself. Stubborn, sure. Judgmental, why not? Isn’t this world full of idiots, anyway?
And yet, somewhere along the way, things change. She changes. Not by force, never that. But by self-awareness. That little niggle that causes discomfort, showing something she doesn’t really like. So, it’s the same determination and stubbornness to do the right thing bring this change.
It’s the story of an empty nester wanting to fill her day with activities that keep her busy, but also wanting the peace that comes from this chaos. How do you get peace from chaos? It’s when you surround yourself with the right kind of love and realize what it means. Amidst all the drama (there’s loads of it, but of the funny kind) are lessons for everyone.

The book has the social media posts I followed religiously about the rescue chick’s updates. Rereading them made me so happy! To see the progress in two days this time, rather than wait and worry every day, was good for my blood pressure, lol.
Food is also integral to the story because it matters, and the author (as well as the MC) is a terrific cook. We have a long-standing agreement that she would adopt me whenever I asked her to, and I get to enjoy all the yummy dishes she prepares.
The author is a poet and loves comedy, so this book manages to combine the poetic style when it goes into introspective mode and uses humor in daily situations. The moment I read ‘iced tea’, I knew there would be only one outcome, and I’m not disappointed (I’m not the one drinking it anyway). Despite all the fun, there are quite a few moments that make you tear up. The laughs don’t come at the cost of emotional depth, and that’s where this book wins.
To summarize, Burps, Chirps & Cat-astrophic Turfs is a delightful, heartwarming, and loving read filled with moments that make life worth living and sharing with others.
